FOUR FIRST TIME SPEEDWAY 660 WINNERS ON SPEEDWEEKEND MONDAY!
(September 4th, 2024) – While Ashton Tucker (#2) capped off the 2024 edition of Lyle Bongard’s RV Sales SpeedWeekend with a historic win in the Yard Gear 250 (read more HERE), four (4) other feature races were contested with four super storylines coming from each race. All four feature winners recorded their first Speedway 660 feature win in their respective classes – with some earning their first win ever in the class!
The Changing Hands Thrift Shop Sharp Shooter division kicked off the feature competition, and it was an invader charging through the field to secure a dramatic victory! With a home track of Spud Speedway, Wayne Fox (#00) made the trek to Speedway 660 for the first time but ended up starting deep in the field for the thirty (30) lap feature. Early in the race there was three and even four wide action entertaining the large SpeedWeekend Monday crowd, and Fox went to work slicing through the field.
All eyes were on points leader BJ Gillespie (#69) who had been dominant as of late, but a restart issue dropped him deep in the field as Fox quickly ended up in the lead. Over the course of the race, he would have to hold off Austin Harnish (#13) to secure the win – and he would do just that, crossing the line first as Harnish was second and Torrin Mitchell (#88) had some big moments in the final laps but held on to grab a podium finish.
Mitchell and Tyler Collett (#21) earned heat race victories earlier in the day. Eighteen (18) Changing Hands Thrift Shop Sharp Shooter competitors entered the Labour Day Monday races.
The Cross Roads Maritime League of Legends were next onto the track and produced a thrilling race of their own that produced a second winner on the weekend. The top five battled hard all race long, swapping the lead and entertaining the SpeedWeekend Monday crowd. But in the end, it was Ayden Christensen (#24) sprinting ahead to a lead just big enough that his fellow competitors could not get back to him as he earned his first Legends win at Speedway 660! Christensen beat Saturday’s winner Josh Langille (#18) to the line – stopping Langille from not only sweeping the weekend, but sweeping the season at Speedway 660 after winning back in June. Tanton Wooldridge (#0) rounded out the podium in third.
Fourteen (14) Legends returned for SpeedWeekend Monday, with Josh Langille joining his brother Nathan Langille (#19) in Riverview Ford victory lane during ten lap heat races.
A former Speedway 660 Sharp Shooter champion captured a long awaited first feature win during the 35-lap Atlantic Modified Tour feature. Tristin Harris (#7) showed great speed all season, but he was a rocket on Monday and wheeled his way to a convincing victory – the first of his career and his first feature victory in any capacity since he won the Sharp Shooter feature on SpeedWeekend in 2019.
Harris took the win over Doug Matchett (#75) and Yves McCray (#58). After a pair of runner-up finishes, Matchett has put himself in a great position to win a Speedway 660 Modified championship. Nine (9) Atlantic Modified Tour drivers were on the grounds – with Joe Hoyt (#17) not starting the feature with mechanical issues, prior to his wild flip during the Yard Gear 250. Harris also won his heat race to kick-off the day.
Dan Duke (#50) had won a lot of races across the region, but he never had won at Speedway 660. The racing pioneer earned that first trip to Riverview Ford victory lane during the Heart of a Champion Hot Rod Classics 30-lap feature. Duke was battling hard with Laurie Hutt (#35), but Hutt got caught up in the backstretch beach and went for a spin, ending his bid for the win. Duke then had to defend from Donny Young (#55) and Pat Lawerence (#U2), who would settle for second and third respectively.
Duke and Peter Lawerence (#99) earned heat race victories earlier in the day.
With Lyle Bongard’s RV Sales SpeedWeekend 2024 now being complete, attention will turn to Riverview Honda Weekend of Champions on Saturday September 21st, as track champions in five divisions are crowned at Speedway 660. You will not want to miss a moment of action as several classes have some dramatic storylines set to unfold for the championship.
