A Weekend to Relax! – Wade’s Weekly #9
Speedway 660 fans, sponsors, drivers, crews and staff have this weekend off. It’s a long weekend in New Brunswick and everyone has a great opportunity to put the racing season on pause and spend time with family and friends.
This weekend gives us a breather before we hit the stretch run of the 2010 season. The next few weeks will see one big event after another take center-stage at Speedway 660. It all wraps up with SpeedWeekend on Labour Day weekend.
Upcoming Events
Our next race is on Saturday, August 7th. The Firecracker 150 goes that night and I know our Sportsman Drivers are excited because this is one of their most exciting events of the year. A week later on the 14th we are going green with another 150, this time the pro stocks go at it and the winner gets a guaranteed spot in the SpeedWeekend 250! I almost forgot that on Sunday the 15th we run our second Enduro of the season. So the weekend of the 14th and 15th will be busy.
On August 21st we will finally get to host Kids Day at Speedway 660. That crowd pleaser was rained out on week two of our season. On the 28th Fan Appreciation Day and our Day of Champions are scheduled. And then of course SpeedWeekend wraps up our racing season.
What a Finish!
People are still talking about The Parts for Trucks 100 last weekend. The Carquest Pro Stock Tour was in town and although the race was slowed by several cautions, the finish was one for the ages. Like him or not, you have to give Lonnie Sommerville a lot of credit.
He went to the back two or three times and kept marching to the front. With a green-white-checker finish, the only way to win was to loosen up the 99 of Craig Slaunwhite and that’s exactly what Billy’s boy did. He got him loose, but didn’t dump him. Once Slaunwhite got his foot off the gas, Lonnie stormed through on the inside all the way to the stripe and the checkers.
Sommerville sure got a reaction from our fans too. Some folks didn’t like the way he got the win, but lots of others knew the only way to win was to bump and run. One thing is for sure, Lonnie Sommerville is a winner. He is one of the best wheelmen in this neck of the woods and he proved that last weekend. And like it or not, he is Speedway 660’s latest Saturday Night Hero!
Have a Great Weekend
Enjoy the long weekend. I know some fans, who can’t get enough racin, are headed to the Island this weekend for the next Carquest Pro Stock Tour event. But lots of other folks are going fishing, whale watching, camping, hiking, biking and a wide range of other summer activities.
No matter what you do this long weekend, have fun and be safe. And get ready to rock-on for the next month, because it is the busiest and most exciting month of racing at Speedway 660.
We will see you all on Saturday night, August 7th, when the Sportsman boys come to play in the Firecracker 150!
