(FREDERICTON, NB – September 22nd, 2022) – The 2022 stock car racing season comes to a close this Sunday, September 25th with the Day of Champions. The racing card was originally scheduled for Saturday, September 24th but pushed back a day due to the impacts expected by Hurricane Fiona on the Maritime Provinces. The event will crown season long track titlists in all four house divisions – the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock, Late Model Sportsman, Shur-Fit Auto Parts, Bumper to Bumper Street Stock and Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters. An on-track autograph session will also take place for fans to get up close and personal with their favorite cars and stars of the Geary, New Brunswick oval. Racing action gets underway on Sunday at 2pm with the on-track autograph session slated for 1pm.
Coming off the Pro Stock 250, the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock division will crown a 2022 champion on Sunday. Wyatt Alexander (Ellsworth, ME) is in the driver’s seat as the point leader. Alexander enters Sunday looking for his first Speedway 660 track title in his first full time season. Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) sits second in the championship standings. His car is currently for sale but can the temptation of winning another Pro Stock championship twist his arm enough to pull the car out of the hauler on Sunday afternoon?!
Ryan Messer (Harvey, NB), Ian Rasmussen (New Denmark, NB) and Kevin Moore (Fredericton, NB) will all look to not only end their Pro Stock season with a trip to Riverview Ford Lincoln Victory Lane but with a top three finish in the championship points. Dustin Tucker (Darling’s Island, NB) and Robert Lee (Fredericton, NB) are tied for sixth in the standings with one race to go and could enter the top five when the dust settles after 50-laps on Sunday.
The Late Model Sportsman division has been a power struggle between siblings for most of the Summer. Older sister Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) has an 11 advantage over Courtney (Boundary Creek, NB) with only one race meet remaining. The sisters have combined for a majority of feature victories this year with only Drew Greenlaw (Eastport, ME) and Brady Creamer (Miramichi, NB) also pocketing feature wins. Should the pair slip and opportunity presents itself, Richard Atkinson (Geary, NB) sits just 17 points out of the lead and six out of second in the championship standings in the Late Model Sportsman class. Caleb Urquhart (Harvey, NB) has not only clinched fourth in the championship but is also the 2022 Rookie of the Year in Late Model Sportsman competition.
The Shur-Fit Auto Parts, Bumper to Bumper Street Stocks is Rick Cashol’s (Saint John, NB) title to lose. He has a 50 point advantage and, based on average car counts this season, only has to start both the heat and feature to clinch another track championship at Speedway 660. Ron Enkel (Saint John, NB) enters second in the standings and has locked up the Rookie of the Year Award in the class. Four drivers, including Cashol, Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois, NB), Shawn Hyslop (St. Stephen, NB and Kenny MacKenzie Jr (Salisbury, NB), have won feature events this season with Hyslop entering Day of Champions as the most recent feature winner on SpeedWeekend 2022 in the D. Gillespie and Sons Trucking 75.
In most divisions, 32 points would be a lead that a team could rely on. While comfortable, BJ Gillespie (Harvey, NB) does not have his name on the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter Championship Trophy quite yet. Gillespie, who made his Late Model Sportsman debut last weekend at Petty International Raceway, will look to lock up back to back titles in the four cylinders this weekend. He leads over Alex Gallant, Wesley Harnish, Mitchell Harvey and Randy Titus with one feature standing in the way of him and a second straight championship. Six different drivers have pulled their Sharp Shooters into Riverview Ford Lincoln Victory Lane this season in feature competition in 2022.
Adult grandstand admission prices are $20 (aged 16 and up). Pit admission is $25 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. New in 2022, all those entering the pit gates must complete their insurance waiver online prior to heading to the track. This can be done on any smart phone and takes seconds to complete. The link to the form can be found on Speedway660.com under the “Race Team Information” menu or by going to Speedway660.speedwaiver.com. A complete race day format will be available via the track’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/Speedway660.
