Speedway 660 Celebrates Canada Day Weekend With Speed Saturday Night

(GEARY, NB – June 27th, 2018) – Speedway 660 is back in action this Saturday night with Championship Point Racing. The Saturday, June 30th card will celebrate the Canada Day weekend with short track racing in four unique classes, including the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Pro Stock, Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman, DMR Auto Street Stock and Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter divisions. Racing begins at 6:30pm on Saturday evening.

With this being the sixth event of the year, the 25th Anniversary Season of Speedway 660 is quickly approaching the halfway point when it comes to chasing championship points. While an event in late June might not seem big in a dozen race point championship, the event carries equal weight in that title fight and one misstep on Saturday could make a long weekend even longer for some race teams.

Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) continued his impressive run in the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock division last week with his third feature win in five races. While O’Blenis searches for his sixth Pro Stock track title, the consistency of Ryan Messer (Harvey) and Greg Fahey (St. Stephen) have kept the pair well within the championship discussion. The pair sit just nine and 17 championship points, respectively, from O’Blenis after a handful of events.

Coming off an exciting Martin’s Home Heating 125, the point chase continues on Saturday night. Up front in the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman division, it is Lonnie Sommerville Racing versus O’Blenis Motorsports with Curtis Collins (Saint John) and Drew Greenlaw (Eastport, ME) pacing the field with Alexandra and Courtney O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) playing chase. All four have one won point paying feature race this season. Jacob Logan (Harvey) is also in the thick of the championship hunt as the calendar nears the end of June.

One would think with Justin Cole (Harvey) winning three of five DMR Auto Street Stock features that he would have a healthy margin in the championship standings. That thought couldn’t be farther away from the truth. The top four in the DMR Auto Street Stock class are separated by just eight points, making it the closest battle at Speedway 660 in 2018. Cole leads youngster Riley Goodwin (MacAdam), Roger Slocum (Chipman) and most recent winner Shawn Hyslop (St. Stephen) after five races. Of the top four, Goodwin, who is only three points out of the lead in the title chase, is the only one that has not won a Street Stock feature this year.

Not to be outdone, only five points separate the top three in the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter standings. Scott “Bat Hubby” Kennie (Fredericton) still maintains the lead but the margin is now four points between he and Bryan Suttie (Keswick). Two time 2018 feature winner Brody Levesque (Fredericton) sits a single point off Suttie’s mark in third. BJ Gillespie (Nackawic) is the most recent feature winner in the class as four different drivers have won a main event so far in five races in 2018.

Returning for 2018, children aged 15 and under will be admitted to the grandstands for free to every stock car event at Speedway 660. The admission structure makes it easier for families to attend race events at the track and received positive feedback from fans when implemented mid-season in 2017.

Adult grandstand admission price for Saturday evening’s Championship Point Racing is $14 (aged 16 and up). Pit admission is $16 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. Pit gates for competitors will open at 1pm, grandstand gates open for spectators at 5pm with racing getting underway at 6:30pm. A complete race day format will be available via Speedway660.com later in the week.
