Wade’s Weekly Issue 9 – Tour Time at Speedway 660
We deserve a great night of racing and that’s what we’ll get this weekend at Speedway 660. The Carquest Maritime Pro-Stock Tour rolls into the Geary Woods and that’s just what we need to quench our thirst for racing.
Wayne Smith sure is riding high, coming off a big win at Riverside Speedway in the IWK 250. It was the first leg of the Triple Crown, with the second event scheduled for Scotia Speedway on August 8th and the Crown Jewel at Speedway 660 with the Peterbilt 250 on SpeedWeekend. If Smith and his number 44 can cross the stripe first in Halifax and Geary, he will take home a fifty thousand dollar bonus!
Wayne Smith, winner of the IWK 250 at Riverside Speedway and 2008 Carquest Pro-Stock champion, will be one of the favourites in the Parts for Trucks 100 at Speedway 660 this weekend.
New Brunswickers didn’t fare all that well at Riverside last weekend. Mike Stevens was the best of the bunch finishing 7th. Former Peterbilt 250 winners Lonnie Sommerville (9th), Dave O’Blenis (16th) and Shawn Tucker (22nd) were probably not too excited about their finishes. Kevin Moore came home 21st and Greg Fahey finished 28th.
As far as the Carquest Pro-Stock points battle goes our New Brunswick drivers are looking pretty good. Tucker is 2nd, Sommerville 4th and O’Blenis 5th. John Flemming tops the tour charts, Shawn Turple is 3rd and Wayne Smith is 6th.
Tour Time at Speedway 660 will bring us the kind of racing you don’t want to miss. It will be the last chance for these tour teams to run our track before the Peterbilt 250. So get ready to be blown away this Saturday night when the Carquest Pro-Stock Tour roars into the Geary Woods.
I know our Sportsman and Street Stock drivers are going to put on a great show this weekend too. They always step-up when the tour comes to town and with championship points on the line, they will be eager to move up in the standings.
I think it’s safe to say we will have a first time champion in the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman Division this year. There are only 25 points separating the top eight and none of them have ever won the Sportsman Crown.
Michael Banks is sitting at the top of the heap, five points up on Glyn Nott and six ahead of John Rankin. Wade Harris is 13 back of Banks in fourth spot. Matt Maillet, Brent Roy and Derek Christie are tied for fifth, 14 out of the lead and only one point behind Harris. That’s an incredible points race that will only get more exciting this Saturday night.
We might also see a first time champion in the Coast Tire Street Stock Division. Brian Fox is having a break-out season and currently has a 22 point advantage on second place Shawn Hyslop. Robert Raynes, Matt Matheson and Jason Shannon round out the top five. But hold the presses because a couple of former champs are sitting 6th and 7th. Rick Cashol and Mike Francis have the experience and machines to make a run at the 2009 title.
We look forward to seeing you this weekend when the Carquest pro-stockers come to Speedway 660. I am sure you will be cheering for your favorite Saturday Night Hero!
