Speedway 660 Salutes Youngest Fans Sunday With Kids Day
(GEARY, NB – May 30th, 2019) – One of the most popular race days of the year at Speedway 660 takes place this Sunday afternoon, June 2nd. Kids Day salutes Speedway 660’s youngest fans, and those young at heart as well, with special promotions throughout the afternoon alongside four divisions of exciting stock car racing. The RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock, Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman, DMR Auto Street Stock and Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters will all compete in their second point race of the season after last Sunday’s events were washed out by rain. The green flag on Sunday afternoon is set for 2pm.
While the focus will turn to the track at 2pm on Sunday, the racing is just a small part of Kids Day. Fans will have an opportunity to see the cars, drivers and crews up close during a 45-minute “cold pit” meet and greet session. Beginning at 1pm, fans can enter the garage area, chat with drivers, get autographs and get a close look at the cars that will be competing in the racing action later that afternoon. When the Intermission rolls around in the racing program, the kids will take to the track for the annual Kids Day Candy Scramble. As the name implies, Speedway 660’s youngest fans will gather on the front straight and will have their chance to grab as much candy as they can when the green flag is given.
For a third season, children aged 15 and under will be admitted to the grandstands for free to every stock car event at Speedway 660. The admission structure makes it easier for families to attend race events at the track and received positive feedback from fans when implemented mid-season in 2017.
With an extra week to tweak on race cars, several drivers will make the 2019 season debut on Sunday afternoon. Among those making their first starts of the new year include reigning Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman champion Drew Greenlaw (Eastport, ME) and 2018 DMR Auto Street Stock feature winners Justin Cole (Harvey, NB) and Riley Goodwin (McAdam, NB). With Kids Day being one of the busiest at the Speedway, these trio will look to shake the rust off quick to find their way to Riverview Ford Lincoln victory lane.
One driver that is making a return to stock car racing this weekend is Peter Martin. The Saint John, New Brunswick racer returns to the DMR Auto Street Stock division for the first time since 2014 and will make select starts throughout the year. Martin, a graduate from the Bandolero division, will drive his familiar No. 44 in his first race of 2019.
“I can’t wait to get back on track,” said Martin ahead of Kids Day. “The car has changed big time since 2014, it is pretty well a brand new rebuild. We had some practice earlier this week and it didn’t take long to get back in the groove. I’d be more than happy to bring home a top five finish and the car in one piece!”
On the strength of feature victories at the Riverview Ford Lincoln Season Opener, Brent Roy (Hanwell, NB; RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock), Richard Atkinson (Geary, NB; Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman), Roger Slocum (Chipman, NB; DMR Auto Street Stock) and BJ Gillespie (Nackawic, NB; Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters) hold the point leads in their respective divisions after one event.
Fans are urged to mark Saturday, June 1st on their schedule as Riverview Ford Lincoln will be hosting a racecar show and shine. You can meet some of your favorite Speedway 660 Saturday night and Sunday afternoon stars and see their racing rides up close and personal. The show will run from 10am to 1pm at Riverview Ford Lincoln at 970 Hanwell Road in Fredericton.
Adult grandstand admission price for Sunday’s Kids Day is $15 (aged 16 and up). Pit admission is $18 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. Pit gates for competitors will open at 9:30am, grandstand gates open for spectators at 12pm with racing getting underway at 2pm. A complete race day format will be available via Speedway660.com later in the week.
