SPEEDWAY 660 HOME TO POPULAR VICTORS SATURDAY NIGHT!

Last Updated: August 18, 2024By

(August 18th, 2024) – It was a night for popular wins and big celebrations at Speedway 660 – and a night that will define championship battles (and settled one championship) in many ways.

The Easy-Kleen Super Late Model Series took center stage with their championship race – the ReCar 150 presented by Wonder Auto & Tire. It was a race which saw Ashton Tucker (#2) put forth a clutch dominant performance to come from behind to tie Cory Hall (#83) in points, and earn the season long title in a tiebreaker settled by feature wins. Hall came up in the runner-up spot in the race and the championship, while Hudson Weston (#43) earned his first career Easy-Kleen SLMS podium in third.

But while the Super Late Models tried to steal headlines, each Speedway 660 support class wrote stories of their own with very compelling racing and big celebrations.

The Summit Dodge Sportsman division contested a competitive 75-lap feature with a thrilling finish. “The Old Musket” Richard Atkinson (#40) started up front and led the majority of the race in a caution free affair. However, in the closing laps the pressure mounted from Brady Creamer (#10) as Creamer closed the gap on the leader from three seconds back in the final 25 laps. Closing in on Atkinson’s bumper and trying for a last lap pass, Creamer had to settle for second as Atkinson earned an overwhelmingly popular victory. Jacob Logan (#37) rounded out the podium ahead of Kenny MacKenzie Jr (#85) and Clark Moore (#54).

Ten Summit Dodge Sportsman cars were in attendance, and the caution free show was completed in under twenty (20) minutes. Atkinson also grabbed the heat race victory. It was his first feature win since 2021 and came with plenty of enthusiasm from both driver and fans!

Five years after his late brother earned the division championship, Jonathan Hanley (#71) scored his first career Shur-Fit Automotive, Bumper to Bumper Street Stock win in convincing fashion – marking the second week in a row with a first time winner for the class. Hanley led wire-to-wire and maintained the gap back to Jimmy Sommerville (#5) throughout to earn the win. Sommerville’s runner-up finish was also his best career result to date – and came by besting heavy hitters like third place Michael Cormier (#68), fourth place Luc McLaughlin (#11) and fifth place Riley Goodwin (#77).

With an eleventh place finish, Justin Cole (#38) gave up his points lead for the first time all season, and now trails Riley Goodwin (#77) by just four (4) points heading into the final races, setting up an exciting showdown.

Fourteen (14) Shur-Fit Automotive, Bumper to Bumper Street Stocks were in the pits, but two were unable to take the call to the green. The thirty-five (35) lap race ran caution free and was completed in ten minutes. Hanley and Rick Cashol (#54) earned heat race victories to start the day.

BJ Gillespie (#69) resumed his dominance of the Changing Hands Thrift Shop Sharp Shooter division, earning his fifth feature victory of the season as he chases a third division championship in four years. It was a raced that looked like would have another first time feature winner at Speedway 660 in August, as Torrin Mitchell (#88) led much of the race. However, Gillespie would get the lead and drive off to victory and Mitchell settled for third behind Tyler Collett (#21).

Collet and Brain Maillet (#83) won heat race victories. Fourteen (14) Changing Hands Thrift Shop Sharp Shooter competitors were in attendance. The twenty-five (25) lap race was completed in thirteen (13) minutes.
