Sharp Shooter 40 Photo Album
(Aug. 9, 2015) Speedway 660 sure started off it’s 2015 stretch run with a bang on Saturday night. After taking the New Brunswick Holiday Weekend off, drivers returned to the Geary Woods with a lot of passion. There was lots of excitement in all five divisions, with the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters taking center-stage! We invite you to check out Michelle Roy’s photo album from Saturday night’s races.
The Weekend Photo Album
The Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters is our fastest growing division. Back in 2010 we started with five or six cars and now the car count is in the twenty range! It was great to see Laurie Cormier, from the Hub City, bring his Sportsman car to 660 on the weekend. Laurie’s Dad Adelard, a member of the Maritime Motorsports Hall of fame, was a legendary driver back in the sixties & seventies.Speaking of legendary drivers, Rick Cashol a five-time DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock champ, finds a little shade and a comfortable chair in the pits before the races get underway. “Hey Dad what are you looking for?” Perhaps Drew Greenlaw’s Dad is looking for a little more speed under the hood of their Sportsman car. There’s no better place to be on race day and here’s our smile of the week to prove it! 2015 has been a tough year for Justin Cole. Maybe this will be the week for this rookie Sportsman driver, from Harvey, to have a good run.Hey is there another new division at 660? We see lots of golf carts in the Geary Woods, but where are the golf clubs? OK, let’s go green! The first Sharp Shooter heat race kicks off the action at 660 on Saturday night.Matt Crocker, Mister Maritime Hustle, grabs the first checkered flag of the evening.A little three-wide action is something our fans are used to in the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter Division and that’s what they get in the second heat race. After they sorted everything out, Kyle MacKinnon takes the 22 to the Riverview Ford Victory Lane.Ashton Tucker, who travels all the way from Sunny Corner every week, wins the West Wood Estates Bandolero heat race. Ashton is a pretty smooth young driver who is gearing up for a strong stretch run.One of our infield crew members gets a birds-eye view of this little dust-up in the first Street Stock heat. It’s a dust-bowl down there in turn three as Luc MacLaughlin goes slide-ways into the bunker. After the dust settles the “Port City Princess” parks her Mustang in Victory Lane. Destiny Enkel is enjoying racing right now, but she’ll head back to St. Thomas University to continue her education in September.Ryan Raynes muscled his way to the front of the field and picked up the win in the second DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock heat race. Shawn Warren takes the checkered flag in the first Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman heat race. Sportsman drivers are getting their last bit of seat time prior to next week’s Firecracker 150.Richard Atkinson goes for a ride on the wild side in Sportsman heat number two.Alexandra O’Blenis and George Jamieson have been racing each other hard the last few weeks. This time O’Blenis makes the outside pass and wins the second Sportsman heat.Rookie of the Year contender Alicia Mowat hits the spin-cycle in her RE/MAX Group Four Realty Pro Stock heat race.Veteran Calvin Rankin cruises to a win in that first Pro Stock heat. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen the 45 take the checkers – good job Calvin!Entering the night third in the Pro Stock points parade, Dave O’Blenis takes the checkers in the second heat race.We saw some tight racing up front in the Bando feature. These guys are going all out to get to Victory Lane on this night. On the last lap we saw a three car wreck on the exit of turn two. Fortunately, all of the young drivers climbed out of their Bando cars unhurt.Ashton Tucker follows up his heat race win with a victory in the Bando feature. A great points night for this championship contender.Riley Goodwin has another good run at Speedway 660, picking up second place in the West Wood Estates Bandolero feature. Hudson Weston was third in the Bando feature Saturday night. This kid has got a bright future in our sport and looks forward to many more years of racing at Speedway 660. The Street Stock feature is up next and it doesn’t take long before they raise a little dust down in turn three! For the fourth time in 2015 Geoff Tugwell takes a trip to the Riverview Ford Victory Lane in a Street Stock feature. Courtney O’Blenis has become one of our best drivers in any division at Speedway 660. She is also one of the fan’s favourite drivers and does a great job in her post-race interviews. On this night the youngest O’Blenis drove to a second place finish in the Street Stock feature. Here’s a shot of the O’Blenis clan. Courtney had to work real hard to bring the 48 home second, she was under a lot of pressure from our point leader who had to settle for third on this night.“Mister Consistency” Rob Raynes took the final podium spot in Saturday’s DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock feature. Rob leads the points mainly because he has been on the podium for every single Street Stock feature in 2015. The Sportsman feature had a bit of everything including a couple of big wrecks, a black flag, some controversy, a busted fence and a wild ride or two. Something broke on Drew Greenlaw’s car and he ended up in the catch fence down in turn three. Fortunately the fence did it’s job and no-one was injured, but Drew’s car was pretty messed up.After the point leader was hauled away on the hook and another championship contender was black-flagged, Randy Moore must have felt like the last man standing. Moore won the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman feature in one of the roughest races we’ve seen this year. On a night when few Sportsman cars were not involved in some sort of incident, George’s Jamieson’s Dodge doesn’t have a mark on it. George kept out of trouble and drove home second in the feature.Remember Justin Cole? He’s the rookie who was looking for something positive to happen after having a tough ride so far in 2015. Well Justin drove his 38 to a third place finish in the Sportsman feature, which is exactly what this race team needed.Dave O’Blenis gets around John Rankin and takes an early lead in the Pro Stock feature. O’Blenis opened up almost a half a lap lead, but a late caution changed everything! Three-time Pro Stock champion Greg Fahey, coming off an impressive Best of the Best 150 win, goes to Victory Lane again. Fahey and O’Blenis put on some show for our fans and in the end the 29 got to the stripe first. It wasn’t the finish he had hoped for, but Dave O’Blenis does take second place in the RE/MAX Group Four Realty Pro Stock feature and gains a little ground on points leader Lonnie Sommerville who was fourth. Dave congratulated Greg on the victory and you gotta believe these two will have some more awesome side-by-side battles before this season is over! Big Kevin Moore had a good run finishing third in the Pro Stock feature. Kevin thanked his crew, particularly Robert Lee (far left), for making him competitive in 2015. Remember Matt Crocker, the winner of one of those Sharp Shooter heat races? His car ended up on the jack-stand in the pits while driver and crew ran around borrowing parts from other teams. They did get the double zero out in time for the Sharp Shooter 40.The hour was getting late, but the Sharp Shooter drivers enjoyed their time under the Speedway 660 lights. After wondering if they would even be able to start the race, Matt Crocker and his team celebrate a victory in the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter 40.Neil Miousse came on strong at the end of the race, but had to settle for second. Had this been a Sharp Shooter 50, Neil just might have been able to go to Victory Lane. Brody Levesque was one of the happiest guys at Speedway 660 on Saturday night. This young driver drove to a well deserved third place finish in the Sharp Shooter 40. Congrats Brody and BTW there’s more trophies where that one came from!
We hope you enjoyed Michelle Roy’s Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter 40 Photo Album. The Sportsman Firecracker 150 is on our schedule for next Saturday night.
We’ll see you at the races!
