Reflections in the Rain! – Wade’s Weekly #7
How was your weekend? Racing rain-outs always get me down. And last weekend was a real downer! Like all of our race fans, sponsors and teams, I was looking forward to the first big Sportsman event of the season. The Martin’s Home Heating 100 is always a great race and our home teams and visiting racers always put on an awesome show.
But Saturday was overcast and dreary with the odd shower thrown in for bad measure. And Saturday night, right about the time the hundred lapper would have started, the skies opened up and a steady rain began to fall. And Sunday was worse, at least here.
The Weekly Point Series Events at Speedway 660 thrill race fans of all ages. Five exciting divisions make our weekly show an unbelievable entertainment value for our fans.
But there was some racing in our region. The weather is Halifax was brutal on Saturday too, but the Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour did race between the rain-drops on Sunday. And Fredericton’s Shawn Tucker won his first tour race of the year. And that win put the three time tour champ at the top of the 2012 point standings. But there’s only 12 points between Tucker and sixth place John Flemming!
In less than two weeks Tucker, Flemming and the rest of the Maritime Tour teams will visit Speedway 660 for the Atlantic Dodge Dealers 100. More than 8000 Speedway 660 fans remember Shawn’s amazing Auto Value 250 win during the 2011 SPEEDWEEKEND!
But before Tucker and the other pro-stockers roll into the Geary Woods, we’ve got some fireworks and a Weekly Points Series Event on the schedule. Saturday night we will see racing in all five divisions and I can’t wait to see how it shakes down. You know, sometimes we take for granted just how awesome our weekly shows really are!
Every division is exciting. Our BandoKids are pretty amazing and provide us with some of the best side by side and bumper to bumper racing you’ll see anywhere. And by the way, they think nothing of going three wide and even four wide when the racing gets real tight.
The four cylinders are an interesting breed too. These little units have a unique sound and make for lots of fun for fans and drivers alike. It’s a cheap – whoops I mean inexpensive – form of racing that allows just about anyone to be part of the Speedway 660 show.
Street Stocks give us the rough and tumble, old-school style of racing a lot of us older fans grew up with. And Sportsman and Pro Stocks are the top two divisions which have a history of exciting races and championship point battles at our track.
While it was raining last weekend, I took time to reflect on what Speedway 660 means to all of us. Before 1994 we didn’t have any stock car racing in the Fredericton area. Sure, we had memories of the old Brookside Speedway and folks who are older than I am claim that back-in-the-day there was some sort of racing going on in New Maryland and Devon too.
But for the last 19 years, Speedway 660 has been the place to be. Right from day one the short-track in the Geary Woods has provided fans with incredible entertainment. Our racing community has grown and today we can confidently say we have the best racing in all of Atlantic Canada and that SpeedWeekend is one of the biggest short track events in the entire country.
So let’s not take any of that for granted. We should be proud of our local track, proud of the Speedway 660 brand of racing and proud of our Weekly Points Series Events. You’ll have to go a long ways to find racing anywhere as good as we see here every week. And hopefully we don’t need another rainy race day to remember all of that!
And this Saturday there will be fireworks on the track and fireworks in the Geary sky too! It’s the Coca Cola Refreshments Canada Day Celebrations and although Canada Day technically doesn’t arrive until Sunday, we are going to celebrate Saturday night with some great racing and a post-race fireworks show.
So tell your friends, tell your neighbours, tell everyone to head on down to Speedway 660 this Saturday night for some awesome short track entertainment. It all gets underway at 7PM, but get here early because the Bando and 4 cylinder heat races go at 6:20. See you at the races!
