Sophomores Shine on 660 Saturday Point Racing Night

Last Updated: June 17, 2018By

(Geary, NB – June 18th, 2018) – After the dust settled on Saturday night at Speedway 660, it was three sophomore drivers who parked their cars in Riverview Ford Lincoln Victory Lane during Championship Point Racing action.

Scott “Bat Hubby” Kennie (Fredericton) scored his first career feature win in the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter feature. Kennie had a spirited battle with BJ Gillespie (Nackawic) before Gillespie faded following a late yellow flag. The No. 71 was then pitted with the task of holding off two-time 2018 winner Brody Levesque (Fredericton) for the big win.

“Getting our first ever win tonight is huge for this team and something we will always remember,” said Kennie after the race. “We learned a lot in our rookie season and worked hard over the winter to improve our efforts in the shop and at the track.”

Levesque was second in the main, followed by Bryan Suttie (Keswick), Gillespie and rookie Randy Titus (French Lake). Gillespie and Allison Hall (Oromocto) took away heat race wins to qualify for the 20-lap feature.

The Late Model features were won by two youngsters who are balancing exams and graduations with checkered flags in the month of June.

Ryan Messer (Harvey) won a hard fought RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock feature for his second career win in the class. Messer started on the pole position in the 13-car field and opened a big lead that would evaporate with a caution on Lap 36 of the 50-lap feature. Matt Harris (Fredericton Junction) scored his best finish of this young 2018 season with a second place run while last week’s winner Greg Fahey (St. Stephen) was third on the night. Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) missed the podium for the first time in 2018 with a fourth place finish. Brent Roy (Hanwell) completed the top five.

Messer and Harris won Pro Stock heat races.

Boundary Creek’s Courtney O’Blenis won her first Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman feature of the season, becoming the fourth different winner in the division in as many races this year. It was not without a fight though as Curtis Collins (Saint John) was able to make ground late in the race and challenged O’Blenis. In the end, the youngest of the O’Blenis racing clan led wire-to-wire in the 40-lap feature.

Collins wound up second while Drew Greenlaw (Eastport, ME) continued his consistent season with his fourth straight podium finish. Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) finished fourth with “The Old Musket” Richard Atkinson (Geary) coming home fifth. Courtney O’Blenis and Collins took home heat race victories in the 11-car field.

Justin Cole (Harvey) capitalized on a restart with three laps to go to win the DMR Auto Sales and Service Street Stock feature in a photo finish. Luc McLaughlin (Geary) led the most laps in the feature prior to a mechanical issue forcing him pit side under the final caution. Cole started on the outside of Riley Goodwin (MacAdam) and was able to best him on the outside by 0.002 seconds.

“I started in tenth and made our way through traffic quicker than I thought we would,” said Cole post race. “I figured third would be the farthest we would get but the late race yellow changed that. The last three laps were exciting with hard door to door racing and we were able to get the win!”

Goodwin would have to settle for second ahead of Roger Slocum (Chipman), Shawn Hyslop (St. Stephen) and Matt Crocker (Minto). Crocker and Goodwin took home heat race victories.

The next event for Speedway 660 is the first extended distance Sportsman race of the season. The Martin’s Home Heating 125 will test man and machine early in the 2018 season to establish supremacy in one of the most competitive weekly divisions around the region. Racing begins at 6:30pm on Saturday, June 23rd.
