PASS 200-Clark Dominates Again at Speedway 660
Speedway 660 fans came out again in big numbers for the 2nd event of the year with the Pro All-Star Series 200 headlining Saturday nights event in the Geary woods. Three divisions on this night would see action including the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman and the RV World Street Stocks.
In the RV World Street stock division Heidi Cooper led most of the way and had built up a commanding lead but with just two laps to go the caution flag flew and they would be all bunched up for the restart. Benji Ruff with a strong car would be on the outside of Cooper and drove his #8 Ford to the front in the 2 lap shootout. That gave Ruff his first feature victory of the year while the steady veteran Rick Cashol managed to squeak by Cooper for a 2nd place finish. That left Cooper with a 3rd place podium finish and very respectable to start to the season.
In the Martin’s Home Heating sportsman division Brent Roy led from green to checker in a dominating win over the field. Glyn Nott started deep in the field and made his way through the field but in the end just didn’t have enough for the 26 of Roy. Rounding out the top three was the 44S of Steve Seveck with his first ever podium finish. Seveck ran a strong race to hold of the 85 of Ken Mackenzie on the last lap to clinch third place.
In the main event, the Pro All Star Series 200 competitors did not disappoint with some amazing side by side racing throughout the field. The pole was held by Geary favourite Travis Benjamin but not far back in the field was Saint John native Lonnie Sommerville and Quebec native Alexandre Gingras. Sommerville made the pass on Benjamin just 15 laps in off a restart and Gingras followed right on the heals of Sommerville. On lap 47, disaster struck for Sommerville when he lost a wheel going into turn 2. Off the restart, Alexandre Gingras took the lead but had challenges from Scott Chubbuck and Ben Rowe. Chubbuck would take the lead off a restart late in the first half of the race only to give way to Rowe with just 10 laps to go before the competition yellow. All 16 competitors would go to the pits at lap 100 for a competition yellow.
Off the restart at lap 100, Chubbuck led over Ben Rowe until lap 104 when defending Auto Value 250 champion Johnny Clark shot into first place with a pass on the outside. From here the crowd would be thrilled with a 40 lap caution free green flag run with Johnny Clark leading the way. Ben Rowe close behind, biding his time, while Lonnie Sommerville down 2 laps crept his way back making an attempt to regain one of his laps. With a caution on lap 144, Sommerville would get the outside line off the restart and his ultimate chance to get one of his laps back. Sommerville would regain that lap off the restart and held it for several laps but Clark was just too strong. Clark would lead the race from lap 165 to the finish under green flag racing to win his third consecutive race at Speedway 660 in a dominating win.
Speedway 660 resumes action next Saturday night June 18th with a Riverview Ford Lincoln points day. For more information logon onto www.speedway660.com
