Firecracker Photo Album
(Aug. 17, 2015) The Firecracker 150 ran on Sunday, after heavy rains forced postponement of the race Saturday night. Fans were treated to a great afternoon of racing it the hot summer sun. We invite you to check out Michelle Roy’s Firecracker Photo Album from this past weekend.
Firecracker 150 – 2015 Version!
Rookie Braxton Stafford and his team were anxious to go racin on Saturday night. But the boys from Blackville and our other race teams and fans had to come back on Sunday afternoon after a massive downpour forced us to postpone the Firecracker 150.Heave Ho! Thanks for the push boys. It sure was hot in the Geary Woods. There’s always lots of work to do in the pits on race day, but sometimes you just gotta take a little break and find a spot in the shade! Nice outfit, no feet! You never know what your going to see in the Speedway 660 campground.Check out the pipes and tat. Next time you go the the gym don’t forget to spend a little time beefing up those legs!Gotta make sure those great sponsors get a little recognition. BTW SpeedWeekend is coming up real soon.A little rainbow over Speedway 660. Is that before or after we got drenched! We finally got to go racin on Sunday afternoon and our first winner was Allison Hall who took the checkers in the first Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter heat race.If you thought it was hot in the stands, how do you think the drivers in these little race cars felt or how about our Fire & Rescue Team members who couldn’t find any shade. The Sharp Shooters were all fired-up in the second heat and ran door-to-door and nose-to-tail through-out their race.Kyle MacKinnon ended up winning that heat race and parked the #22 in the Riverview Ford Victory Lane.Eric Matthews, from Lakeside, had a fast car on Sunday and drove to victory in the first DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock heat.“I get around with a little help from my friends.” Street Stock racin is as “old-school” as it gets. Fans love the way these drivers trade a little paint! Our “Broom-Crew” always do a great job, but they really deserve a little more recognition on a hot, humid afternoon in the Geary Woods!“Have it Your Way”. Courtney O’Blenis takes her Burger King sponsored machine to victory lane in the 2nd Street Stock heat race. A pretty good start to the afternoon for this young lady!Bring on the Sportsman drivers. Matt Maillet wins the first qualifying heat race for the Firecracker 150 and earns the pole position. Two of the Firecracker 150 favourites have a pretty good battle in the second qualifying heat. Lonnie Sommerville (#27) ends up taking the win over Dave O’Blenis. The third qualifying heat race see Ken Magliaro, from Sydney, Cape Breton go for a spin down in turn three.Randy Moore, the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman point leader, wins the third heat race. Randy is having an awesome year and is looking for another good run in the Firecracker 150.It’s time for the “Creature Feature”. It didn’t take long for the Sharp Shooters to get out of shape and slideways on the front stretch.Neil Miousse got the worst of that first go-around and had to be assisted to the pits by Dunphy’s Towing.Curtis Collins had a great afternoon winning the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter feature. Brody Levesque crossed the finish line in second place, but unfortunately for Brody, his car was one of three Sharp Shooters to fail the post-race inspection. Kyle MacKinnon was third in the race, but like Brody, Kyle’s car didn’t make it through post-race inspection. Jeremy Doran, the Sharp Shooter point leader, finished fourth in the race but his car was disqualified as well. After all was said and done, Malcolm Suley in car # 57 was declared the second place finisher in the Sharp Shooter feature.Noah Gillespie in car # 69 was awarded third place in the Sharp Shooter feature after everything was sorted out. Time for the Street Stock feature. Look at this, we’ve got one of our biggest fields of cars in this division this season.Rick Cashol gets out to the early lead, but he’s under a tremendous amount of pressure from two of the top Street Stockers in all of Atlantic Canada. And here’s the inside move for the lead. This kid can wheel a race car! For the second time in her rookie season, Courtney O’Blenis goes to the Riverview Ford Victory Lane after winning a Street Stock feature. Geoff Tugwell, who has won four DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock features this year, tried his best to chase down Courtney, but on this day had to settle for second best.Rob Raynes continued his streak. He’s been on the Street Stock podium every single time we’ve raced in 2015! This time our point leader was third. The Firecracker 150 goes green and Matt Maillet and Lonnie Sommerville lead the field down into turn one for the first time.Whoops, we get an early caution! When the action resumes Sommerville gets a good run on Maillet and sprints into the lead. Then Dave O’Blenis takes his 48 to the inside and makes the pass on Lonnie for the lead. These two had a pretty good battle for several laps before O’Blenis took command. This is gonna bring out a caution and a hotly contested re-start!Here they come, it doesn’t get much tighter than this. Half-way is just around the corner, so-to-speak!There’s a mid-race break in the Firecracker 150. Drivers park their cars on the front stretch, crews add fuel, clean the windshield and adjust the tire pressure before the race goes green again. While the car is getting fueled up Justin Cole gets a cold drink and tries to find a little shade. Donnie Greer, Speedway 660’s Chief Technical Inspector, makes sure the race teams follow the rules during the mid-race break. Drew Greenlaw and several other drivers were kind enough to grant us interviews during the mid-race break. Time to get back in the cars, buckle-up and get ready for the final 75 laps. The race goes green but down in turn one the cars stack up and……a few drivers go for a wild ride!We get a nice stretch of green flag racing that sees O’Blenis and Sommerville continue to battle for the lead. But Devin Snell (#10) is poised to make a move and he’ll get around Lonnie for second and then set his sights on the leader.Just as Devin appeared ready to challenge for the lead he had a mechanical issue that forced him to leave the track on the hook. Then Chris Reid, from Cape Breton, ends up precariously perched on the bank near pit entrance. We get a good run to the finish and Tim Elliot waves the checkers for Dave O’Blenis, the Firecracker 150 winner. Dave pulls into the Riverview Ford Victory Lane and gets out of a hot race car for his post-race interview.Randy Moore saved his riggin, during the race and made a late charge to come home second in the Firecracker 150. Randy celebrates with his sons Andrew and Jackson.Brent Roy made a couple of pit stops, during the last two cautions, and his team was able to get him on the podium with a third place finish. After the race Brent, like most of the other drivers, needed a cold drink after getting out of a hot race car.Dave, Randy and Brent get together in the Riverview Ford Victory Lane for the traditional podium photo for this year’s Firecracker 150.You gotta give this team credit. BTW the three fingers are being displayed because Dave O’Blenis has won the Firecracker 150 for three years in a row!
