Finally…We got to go Racing! – Wade’s Weekly #9

Last Updated: July 9, 2012By

Wow – was it ever great to be back in the Geary Woods last weekend. After two consecutive rain-outs, everyone was anxious to see some fantastic short-track racing. And that’s just what we saw last Saturday night, although “Mother Nature” reminded us she was still really in charge, during a 90 minute rain delay!

There was a big build-up for Shawn Tucker, going into the Atlantic Dodge Dealer’s 100.  He is a home-town favourite, winner of the 2011 Parts for Truck Pro Stock race here, winner of the 2011 Auto Value 250, three time tour champ and two-time Auto Value 250 champion. Tucker didn’t disappoint his fans or sponsors, driving the Rockico Truck and Trailer Chevrolet to victory.

Last weekend, Team Tucker celebrated the third win in their last four races at Speedway 660. Tucker and Johnny Clark, who has won four out of his last five races here, could be headed for a major league show-down at the Auto Value 250 during this year’s SPEEDWEEKEND!

I was impressed with Shawn’s approach to the race on Saturday night. Early on he cooled his heels and was content just to hang around in the top five. Then he worked his way to 2nd and with the half way challenge money on the horizon, Tucker responded by powering his way past Shawn Turple for the lead. Shortly after that the rain fell and after a lengthy track drying exercise, Team Tucker came back stronger than ever and never relinquished the lead.

But it wasn’t as easy as it might have looked from the grandstands. Just before the rain, Mike Stevens really pressured Shawn and Greg Proude was breathing down his neck too. Then with about ten to go, John Flemming came on strong and Tucker had to hold him off for his second tour victory of the season.

The Parts for Trucks Pro Stock Tour and Speedway 660 really gave our fans their money’s worth on Saturday night. The determined effort to dry the track and finish the race was a testament to the dedication and commitment from race officials. And many thanks to the pro stock teams who ran countless yellow flag laps to dry out a wet track.

Then there were the fans. Everyone in the tower was amazed at how many folks hung in to see the rest of the race. Fans knew race officials and the pro stock teams were doing their best to go back racing and they were rewarded by seeing an exciting finish.

Tucker was glad to get the win, but even happier to be able to give the Speedway 660 fans the full 100 laps. Tucker’s triumph jumped him from eighth to third place in the standings, just six points behind second place Donald Chisholm and eight behind leader Darren MacKinnon.

Tucker’s win sets the stage for a potential SpeedWeekend showdown. Shawn has won three out of his last four races at Speedway 660 and Johnny Clark has won four out of his last five! Tucker broke Clark’s streak by winning last year’s Auto Value 250 and Johnny broke Shawn’s streak by winning this year’s PASS 150. Both of these two-time Auto Value 250 winners will be top contenders and may lock horns when SpeedWeekend rolls around in less than two months!

Congrats to Shawn Warren and Shannon Brake on their second feature wins of the season on Saturday night. Warren is having unprecedented success in the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman Division, while Brake’s win has him deadlocked with Rick Cashol in the RV World Street Stock point standings.

This weekend drivers in all five divisions are excited to get back in action as Speedway 660 holds the Coca Cola Refreshments Weekly Points Series Event. With the Parts for Trucks Tour here last weekend and rain-outs the previous two weekends, it has been a month since the 4 cylinders, Hanwell Village Mart Bandoleros and A.L. Gullison Disaster Kleenup Pro Stocks have raced. So everyone, especially our Bando Boys and Girls, can’t wait to turn-up-the-wick and go racin!

It’s going to be another excitement packed evening in the Geary Woods. So tell your friends, tell your neighbours, tell everyone that Speedway 660 is the place to be this Saturday. Racing starts at 7PM, but get here early to see the Bando and 4 cylinder heats at 6:20. See you at the races!
