Courtney O’Blenis Bests Field with Late Pass in Ricky Bobby 150 Presented by DMR Auto
(GEARY, NB) – On the biggest stage for Street Stocks in Atlantic Canada, it was two up and coming Late Model stars who raced for the win in the Ricky Bobby 150 presented by DMR Auto at Speedway 660.
Boundary Creek, New Brunswick’s Courtney O’Blenis muscled her way to the inside of Eastport, Maine’s Drew Greenlaw, taking the lead in the event within the final five laps. O’Blenis, who has made her share of trips to Riverview Ford Lincoln Victory Lane in a Street Stock, was able to hold on over the late laps around the Geary oval to take home the second annual event. While she had driven the race car before, it was the first time she and team owner Tom Nicholls and the Big Poppa Motor Sports team based out of Sherwood, Prince Edward Island visited victory lane together.
Greenlaw, the 2018 Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman champion, finished second in the Ricky Bobby 150 after leading the most laps in the second 75-lap segment of the race. Greenlaw drove the No. 68 Moncton Chrysler Dodge ride for Michael Cormier (Grand-Barachois, NB) and was prepared out of the Lonnie Sommerville Racing stables for the special event.
Following post race technical inspection, 2018 DMR Auto Street Stock Rookie of the Year Kyle MacKinnon (Lincoln, NB) was able to grab third place. The finish was his best to date in a Street Stock. Chris Hanley (St. Stephen, NB) and Logan Power (Riverview, NB) completed the top five of the 21 cars who took the green flag in the 150-lap event.
Over $6,000 in lap money and contingency bonuses were on the line in the event thanks to the generosity of various marketing partners who supported the event. In total, over $11,000 was up for grabs for the DMR Auto Street Stocks on Saturday evening, with O’Blenis taking over $1,500 of that as the winner of the race.
Ryan Richard (Saint John, NB), Riley Goodwin (McAdam, NB) and Peter Martin (Saint John, NB) are credited with heat race victories.
In addition to the DMR Auto presents the Ricky Bobby 150, point racing was contested in three Speedway 660 house divisions with features run in between the 75-lap segments of the Street Stock classic.
Multi-time RE/MAX East Coast Elite Pro Stock champion Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) was put to the test by 2018 Pro Stock 250 winner Ryan Messer (Harvey, NB) in the 50-lap Pro Stock feature on Saturday. O’Blenis would record his fourth feature victory of the season ahead of Messer and Greg Fahey (St. Stephen, NB). Fahey was among the drivers doing double duty on the evening as he split the No. 99 Street Stock with track champion Shawn Hyslop (St. Stephen, NB) during the Ricky Bobby 150. Messer won the qualifying heat race for the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stocks. With his performance on the night, O’Blenis will unofficially cut the point lead Brent Roy (Hanwell, NB) has to four heading into their next event on July 27th.
The Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman feature on Saturday evening was won by Curtis Collins. The Barnesville, New Brunswick driver has lit it up as of late with Saturday’s victory being his third feature triumph in his last four point races. Ryan Raynes (Saint John, NB) scored his best finish of the year with a second place effort while Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek, NB) completed the podium. Mark Harris and Collins each won heat races.
The Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter feature would ultimately go to Scott “Bat Hubby” Kennie (Fredericton, NB) after the winner failed post race technical inspection. For Kennie, it was his first feature victory of the year and had to race away from a spirited battle for second late between Kids Day winner Matt Martin (Haneytown, NB) and reigning track champion Bryan Suttie (Keswick, NB). The two swapped paint late with Martin’s Gilda Racing entry racing to the runner-up spot at the finish. Martin, rookie Tristan Harris (Harvey, NB) and Suttie all raced to heat race wins in the 22 car field.

You never know what Santa and his elves will bring to Speedway 660 for all the good race fans in the Geary woods. As always, those fans will be treated to great racing in four divisions, including the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock, DMR Auto Street Stock, Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman and Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters.
