Championship Chases Continue Saturday

(Geary, NB – June 14th, 2018) – The 25th Anniversary Season of Speedway 660 continues this Saturday night, June 16th, with a full card of racing action. Exciting stock car racing will be seen in four unique classes, the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stocks, Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman, DMR Auto Sales and Service Street Stocks and Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters. The green flag will go in the air on Saturday at 6:30pm.

While championships are won on Night of Champions in August, a title year can certainly be broken with a subpar run at any championship point event throughout the year. After three events that have seen some thrilling short track racing, the stage is set for another night of building championship dreams for a number of hard working race teams.

Dave O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) enters Saturday night with the point lead in the RE/MAX East Coast Elite Realty Pro Stock division on the strength of three top two feature finishes in as many races. O’Blenis started off with back to back wins and followed it up during last Saturday’s 50-lap feature with a strong second place effort to Greg Fahey (St. Stephen). Fahey, who said after the race the team needed the feature win they earned, moves to third in the standings. Sandwiched between two drivers who own nine Speedway 660 Pro Stock titles collectively is sophomore driver Ryan Messer (Harvey). Messer barely missed the podium one week ago after two runner-up finishes to O’Blenis in the first two weekends.

While Dave O’Blenis has lit the lamp twice in the Pro Stock ranks in 2018, his daughter Alexandra O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) responded with a Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman win of her own last Saturday night. The win, which also marked her third top five feature finished of the year, moved O’Blenis into third place in the standings. Drew Greenlaw (Eastport, ME) maintains his top spot on in the standings, adding two points to his margin over Curtis Collins (Saint John) after last weekend’s event.

The Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman division has been competitive with each of the top five in points, including Jacob Logan (Harvey) and Alexandra’s younger sister Courtney O’Blenis (Boundary Creek) each racing their way to at least one podium finish in the first three races.

Saturday night will serve as the final tune up before the first major Sportsman division race in Atlantic Canada for 2018. While all eyes will be on Saturday’s 40-lap Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman main event, teams will also be tweaking their setups for the Martin’s Home Heating 125 coming up on Saturday, June 23rd.

Justin Cole (Harvey) and Shawn Hyslop (St. Stephen) returned to the podium last weekend in the DMR Auto Sales and Service Street Stock division. For Cole, it meant a return to the top of the point standings by a single point after three races over one of the most popular drivers in the class Riley Goodwin (MacAdam). Roger Slocum (Chipman) finds himself third in the standings after a second straight appearance on the podium after last weekend’s third place run. Charlotte County’s Hyslop and Chris Hanley (St. Stephen) complete the top five in the Street Stock division after a trio of races.

Fans are encouraged to be at Speedway 660 on Saturday night for a major announcement involving the July 21st running of the DMR Auto Sales and Service Street Stock 100.

Sophomore driver Scott “Bat Hubby” Kennie (Fredericton) finds himself atop the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters standings for the first time in his career. Kennie will not be able to rest on his advantage on the field though as knotted up for second are the pair of feature winners on the year in Brody Levesque (Fredericton) and Bryan Suttie (Keswick). Suttie scored a popular win on Kids Day while Levesque has two wins under his belt including the prestigious Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters 50 from one week ago. Rookies Randy Titus (French Lake) and Randy Storey (Fredericton) find themselves in fourth and fifth, respectively, following three events.

Returning for 2018, children aged 15 and under will be admitted to the grandstands for free to every stock car event at Speedway 660. The admission structure makes it easier for families to attend race events at the track and received positive feedback from fans when implemented mid-season in 2017.

Adult grandstand admission price for Saturday evening’s Championship Point Racing is $14 (aged 16 and up). Pit admission is $16 and is restricted to those 16 years of age and older. Tickets are available at the gate on race day. Pit gates for competitors will open at 1pm, grandstand gates open for spectators at 5pm with racing getting underway at 6:30pm. A complete race day format will be available via Speedway660.com later in the week.
