MICHAEL CORMIER KICKS OFF SPEEDWEEKEND WITH D. GILLESPIE & SONS TRUCKING 100 WIN!

Last Updated: August 31, 2024By

(August 30th, 2024) – Michael Cormier (#68) stole the show on night one of Lyle Bongard’s RV Sales SpeedWeekend 2024, commanding the field for much of the D. Gillespie & Sons Trucking Street Stock 100 to win the big event for the second time!

Unlike his win from 2021 – where Cormier found himself having to come through the field late in the race – the 2024 win came in relatively dominant fashion. Starting fifth, Cormier waged war with pole sitter Luc McLaughlin (#11) – the same duo who battled for the win one year ago – in a side-by-side battle for upwards of twenty laps in the early going before he cleared the 11 car. Once ahead, Cormier never looked back and appeared to be cruising to Riverview Ford victory lane, until a caution on lap 85 brought the field back together.

Only six (6) cars were on the lead lap for the final sprint, and right front the drop of the green things shook up and Riley Goodwin (#77) capitalized to get up to second. McLaughlin had to go to work but would drive back around the 77 car to regain the runner-up position – but that was all in Michael Cormier’s mirror as he crossed the line victorious while McLaughlin and Goodwin rounded out the podium.

Three (3) cautions slowed the 100-lap race which took 42 minutes to complete. Twenty-one (21) Shur-Fit Automotive, Bumper to Bumper Street Stocks were in attendance. Heat race winners were McLaughlin, Justin Cole (#38) and Karl Schaefer (#00), with this being Schaefer’s first career heat race victory.

The George Fitzpatrick Memorial for the Atlantic Modified Tour produced a first-time winner for the series. Miramichi driver Conrad Murphy (#89) had a strong run all race long – and originally crossed the line second behind Kevin Bailey (#2). However, following post-race technical inspection, Murphy would be awarded the first feature victory of his racing career. Doug Matchett (#75) went for a spin after tangling with Joe Hoyt (#17) early, but he marched back to the front and ultimately would claim the runner-up position when the night was over, with Zean Dutcher (#55) being awarded the final podium position in third.

Matchett and Chris Wilson (#2W) – the top two in Speedway 660 Modified points – earned heat race victories to start the day. Thirteen (13) Atlantic Modified Tour competitors were in attendance.

BJ Gillespie (#69) is hard to stop in Changing Hands Thrift Shop Sharp Shooter division action, as he earned yet another victory on the year Friday night – but it didn’t come easy. Robert Kamphuis (#99) showed the way for much of the race, as Gillespie and Terry Collett (#21) followed each other through the field. They got to Kamphuis – who earned a halfway bonus courtesy of Linex Fredericton for leading the halfway lap – but it would take a few laps before Gillespie pounced and took the lead.

Kamphuis looked to be en route to a podium finish, but some intense driving in the final laps saw him drift back to sixth while Matt Martin (#33) shot like a cannon from seventh to third to claim the final podium position.

Seventeen (17) Changing Hands Thrift Shop Sharp Shooters partook in the thirty (30) lap feature to get Lyle Bongard’s RV Sales SpeedWeekend underway.

Action continues on Saturday with the Riverview Ford Sportsman 150 with action getting underway at 5pm.

Sunday’s portion of the event, including the 24th Annual Yard Gear 250 presented by Valvoline Motor Oil, has been postponed until Monday. A start time and format will be updated soon. Bandoleros will be removed from the card for Monday due to a scheduling conflict, but the Heart of a Champion Hot Rod Classics, Atlantic Modified Tour, Cross Roads Maritime League of Legends, and Changing Hands Thrift Shop Sharp Shooter divisions will be part of the action. NASCAR champion Ben Rhodes will be sticking around to put on a show and chase victory in the big race.
