SpeedWeekend 2015 is over and the only things better than the weather was the awesome racing and friendships that were made or renewed at Speedway 660! It was incredible four days and we’ll cherish the memories made in this year’s edition of Atlantic Canada’s most exciting weekend of racing. You can’t beat that New Brunswick corn! Speedway 660 kicks off the Irving Blending & Packaging SpeedWeekend with it’s biggest infield party ever.OK Kevin who is #1, you or RE/MAX?Tristan Horncastle hangs out with some of his young fans before taking the stage.The Speedway 660 infield party has always got to have a good ole fashioned bonfire. Don’t get too close though. Wow what a crowd. Are you ready to see a great SpeedWeekend Friday Night Show?Are you ready. Come on folks you are in the Geary Woods on SpeedWeekend and its time to…..Rock this place! We’ve got great racin the next three days, but tonight we’re gonna party.And party we did, but after a nice long show, Tristan and the Boys had time for just one last song. That’s more than “A Little Bit of Alright”.
Early on Saturday there were Pro Stock cars lined up for technical inspection. There were lots of cars and lots of campers too!Travis Benjamin, the defending Irving Blending & Packaging Pro Stock winner, is back for a shot at winning this prestigious race for a second year in a row. There were also plenty of race teams in the pits for the Irving I24 Sportsman 150. Our friends from the Atlantic Modified Tour were also getting their cars unloaded and ready for SpeedWeekend Saturday night.Nobody complained about the SpeedWeekend heatwave, but lots of folks were anxious to find a cold drink and a little shade. The Bando Boys were also hard at work making a few last minute adjustments on their cars before the Saturday night show.While the focus was on race cars, we had a few self-propelled two-wheeled machines in the campground. Nice helmets boys!Everyone was anticipating a great weekend of racing and everyone had lots to smile about with the great weather, awesome car count and friendly fans and race teams.The folks from Irving Blending & Packaging were all set up early Saturday to welcome fans and race teams. The Irving I24 team takes a little break for this photo-op before the crowd began rolling in.As the stands began to fill up there was electricity in the air as folks looked forward to an awesome night and weekend of racing action. But first let’s ask our fans if they’d like to participate in a pre-race autograph session involving over 30 of the best Sportsman drivers in our region.George Jamieson makes this young race fan happy by signing an autograph on a nice driver’s card Our 2015 Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman Rookie of the Year poses for a photo with a couple of his fans. Fourteen year old Ryan Messer would be the youngest Sportsman driver in the race.“I might have been the youngest driver in the race if I hadn’t banged up my leg.” “You want me to sign my autograph where? OK but I hope you know this is a permanent marker!”Christine Taylor, Irving Blenging & Packaging Marketing Manager, welcomes fans to SpeedWeekend and says it’s time to go racing!The first Sportsman qualifying heat goes green and SpeedWeekend racing action is underway. Lonnie Sommerville grabs the first checkered flag of SpeedWeekend and puts the Pub’s Drive Through Bottle Exchange Chevy on the pole for the I24 Sportsman 150. Dave O’Blenis won heat number two and will line up on the outside of the front row for the big race. George Jamieson made all the Dodge fans happy when he raced his way into Victory Lane in the third qualifying heat race.Atlantic Modified Tour drivers take to the track and number 5, Drew Betts out of Doaktown, takes the heat race.We got a beautiful SpeedWeekend sunset just as the Riverview Ford Fusion pace car brought the Bandolero drivers out on the track.Ashton Tucker, the 2015 Westwood Estate Apartments Bando champ, picks up the first heat win.Austin MacDonald, grandson of legendary Pro Stock driver and current Pro Stock car owner, won the second Bando heat race. Ashton Tucker is back in the Riverview Ford Victory Lane after claiming the checkers in the Bando feature. Ashton’s dream of driving one of those big Pro Stocks is closer than most folks think!Michael Cormier rattled off a great second place finish in the Bando feature. Are you from Albert County Michael?AMTs awesome announcer Jessie Thompson gets ready to interview feature winner Mike Raeburn. Drew Betts drives home in second place. Betts made a couple of really nice moves to get up to second and likely needed another few laps to reel in Sparky! Brandon Skidmore came away from SpeedWeekend with a trophy. Brandson finished third in the Atlantic Modified Tour feature race.The Irving I24 Sportsman 150 goes green and Lonnie Sommerville beats Dave O’Blenis to the stripe to lead lap one. Lonnie would lead for a good many laps.George Jamieson climbs the bank and kicks up a little SpeedWeekend dust.Fans cheered their approval when Alexandra O’Blenis blew by her Father Dave during the first half of the race. Later Dave would pit to see if he could get the 48 a little faster. It’s all a blur as race teams rush out to the front stretch with fuel and make minor adjustments after a caution at lap 73. Race officials decided to have the half-way break a couple of laps early. Wayne Smith’s crew were working hard to prepare their driver for a push to get some bonus money. Braxton Stafford was one of the cars involved in that crash at lap 73. The front end of the 91 has seen better days!Dave O’Blenis went all the way to the back of the 30 car field after he pitted for adjustments. He raced hard in the second half of the race and….. …climbed out of his car with a third straight SpeedWeekend Irving I24 Sportsman 150 win! Wayne Smith and his crew celebrate a second place finish in the Sportsman race. Wayne also claimed a $700 half way challenge from Pubs Drive Through Bottle Exchange and a $1000 bonus from Farrells Excavating. Laurie Cormier was ecstatic with his third place finish. His car came to life late in the race and he made a mad dash toward the front of the field. Laurie dedicated the race to his Father Adelard, a legendary race car driver, who passed away earlier this summer.Laurie, Dave and Wayne pose for the traditional podium winners photo. The Irving I24 Sportsman 150 was an exciting race that had fans on the edge of their seats. Just one more shot from SpeedWeekend Saturday night. Sunday is a new day with a new race to get ready for. Crews are busy early in the day preparing for the Irving Blending & Packaging Pro Stock 250. Is that Ashton Tucker, winner of last nights Bando feature. He’s leaning on a Pro Stock car and that’s his helmet on the roof. What’s up with that?We are gonna need tires today. 250 laps is a long race, so they are gonna let us use eight tires! It’s time to get serious and put on your game face.Cassius Clark is wicked fast and rockets his way to victory lane in the first qualifying Pro Stock heat. The win gives Cassius the pole and now he can take it easy until the big race starts in a few hours.DJ Shaw, up from New Hampshire, takes the second heat and will join Clark on the front row when the Irving Blending & Packaging 250 takes the green flag.Just a few hours after winning the big Sportsman race Dave O’Blenis has a great start to SpeedWeekend Sunday by winning the third Pro Stock Qualifying heat race.The fourth and final qualifying heat race goes to Greg Fahey. Greg won the Best of the Best 150 earlier in the summer at Speedway 660 and has been looking forward to the 250 ever since.Brody Levesque gets into the act and picks up the first heat win when the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooters get their turn to entertain fans.Jeremy Doran does a nice job and drives the 8 car into victory lane in the second Sharp Shooter heat race.Roger Slocum, the 2013 DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock champ, wins the first SpeedWeekend 2015 Street Stock heat race.Rob Raynes, our 2015 Street Stock champ, wins the second heat race and sets his sights on a SpeedWeekend feature win.John Flemming borrowed a car from Lonnie Sommerville after blowing up the motor in the 97. John almost takes flight in the first Pro Stock Consi and ends up on top of the berm!Sharp Shooter feature action! These little front wheel drive four cyls provide some excitement for our fans. When the dust clears Brody Levesque goes to victory lane for the second time. He claims the final Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter feature win of the season.Matt Crocker wraps up a successful season by finishing second in the Speedweekend Sharp Shooter feature.Kyle Boudreau, the 2015 Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter champ, drove to a third place finish in the SpeedWeekend feature.It’s time for the 50 lap Street Stock feature and doesn’t take long for these drivers to start mixin it up! Rob Raynes puts an exclamation point on his season by winning the feature race. The 2015 DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock champ was on the podium for every single race this year! Hey Tim are you a member of Team Raynes?Courtney O’Blenis, our Street Stock Rookie of the Year, finished off her season with a terrific second place finish.Geoff and Jill Tugwell celebrate a great third place finish. Geoff, who finished second in Street Stock points this year, was happy to be on the SpeedWeekend podium.Brent Dunphy, Speedway 660’s Race Director, holds a drivers meeting just before the Pro Stock cars roll out on the track.Then we invite fans out on the front stretch for an opportunity to meet the drivers and get some autographs.Tim Terry catches up with Sarah McKay and gets her thoughts on the upcoming Irving Blending & Packaging 250. Fans kept drivers busy signing autographs. Everyone enjoyed their time on the track before the big race. Here are the thirty drivers who are about to run the Irving Blending & Packaging Pro Stock 250.The dignitaries are in position and it’s time for the pre-race ceremonies.Christine Taylor, Marketing Manager for Irving Blending & Packaging, welcomes fans to SpeedWeekend and the Pro Stock 250.Fourteen year old Raphael Lessard, the only driver from Quebec in this years race, shakes hands with dignitaries during driver introductions.Here are the trophies for the podium finishers! The Riverview Ford pace car bring 30 of the best Pro Stock in eastern North America down the back stretch just before we go green.Cassius Clark jumps into the early lead. Clark, who was challenged by several drivers during the race, but dominated the 250 leading all but eight laps! DJ Shaw, Dave O’Blenis and Greg Fahey all hounded Cassius early in the race, but no-one had an answer for the King Racing Team on this night.Things were going along nicely until… ….the Big Wreck down in turn one brought out a red flag!This can’t be good, at least for the race cars. The drivers, on the other hand, were unscathed. Here’s another angle.Back to green flag racing and Cassius gets the inside track on Austin Theriault.Craig Slaunwhite and Greg Fahey make a late charge but neither of these drivers, or anyone else, would have anything for Cassius Clark.Johnny Clark, a two-time winner of this event, makes a big push at the end of the race but try as he might, he just couldn’t bring the 54 to the front.Cassius pulls into victory lane with fireworks lighting up the Geary Woods.A smiling Cassius claims the Irving Blending and Packaging Pro Stock 250 trophy.Here’s something else that makes Cassius smile. The winner’s cheque is for a record $30,100.00. That’s some payday for an evening’s work! Johnny Clark, a fan favourite, claimed the second place trophy and gave Cassius Clark (no relation) a lot of credit for winning the big race.Craig Slaunwhite drove home in third place. Craig, a former 250 winner, was the top Canadian in this year’s race.Cassius, Johnny and Craig are on the podium in the 2015 Irving Blending & Packaging Pro stock 250. Nicely done boys.BTW -Cassius led three $1000 laps in the race including the Modern Electric Half Way Challenge Award.OK, lets get the whole team together for one last shot and then start making plans to come back to 660 in 2016 to do this all over again!Everybody has a blast during Monday’s Capital City Auto Parts Enduro 200. “Bat-Boy” initiated a “bounty” for who-ever put race leader Jacob Logan in the pits. Before long all these other kids put money in the pot and after the race they gave Richard Savoie $63 for sending poor Jacob off the rack!Pat Sharpe won the ENDURO race and claimed his fifth Speedway 660 ENDURO championship. Sharpie is not sure if he’ll be back in 2015 to make a run for number six. Luke Shaeffer and Karl Dukeshire shared the driving duties in the 00 and brought her home in second place.The checkered flag came out when Jesse Madore was in the pits, but Jesse still finished in third place.Thanks for coming out for Irving Blending & Packaging SpeedWeekend 2015.
