Wow, what a SpeedWeekend! 2014 will go down as one of the most memorable SpeedWeekend’s ever. Travis Benjamin’s first Re/Max 250 victory was one of the most exciting in the history of the race. Check out our massive SpeedWeekend Photo Album.
SPEEDWEEKEND SATURDAY
The campground was full and race fans gathered from all over the Maritimes, Quebec and the eastern United States for SpeedWeekend 2014.
On Saturday night, the first race of SpeedWeekend was won by Russell Smith, who punched his ticket to the Irving Oil Blending & Packaging 150.
Andrew Rodgers grabs the second heat race and qualifies for the biggest Sportsman race of the season.
Dave O’Blenis, winner of the Firecracker 150, put the 48 in the show by winning the third heat race.
Colby Smith, winner of the 2013 Irving Oil Blending & Packaging 150, takes the fourth Sportsman heat.
Ryan Messer, a former Speedway 660 Bando champ, wins an AMT heat race.
Joe Hoyt takes the second AMT heat race.
Cory Hall was on his game during SpeedWeekend 2014. The young man from Jolicure, won the Westwood Estate Apartments Bandolero heat race.
Cole Tanner, our 2014 Bando champion, raced to a third place finish in the SpeedWeekend feature. Cole is graduating from the Bando class and moving up to a Legend Car next year. Good luck Cole, thanks for the great memories and let’s hope we get those Legends up to Speedway 660 in 2015!
Braden Langille had a great SpeedWeekend run, finishing 2nd in the Bando feature.
Cory Hall was all tuckered out after winning that 25 lap Westwood Estate Apartments Bando feature.
That’s more like it! Cory poses for the winner’s shot. This young man is likely going to jump up into another division in 2015. Good luck Cory and remember loose is fast!
Cody Price, Joe Hoyt and Robert Miner make up the AMT SpeedWeekend podium.
Some of the Irving Oil Blending & Packaging crew gets ready for the big Sportsman race.
Lap One Wreck! Dylan Gosbee and Alexandra O’Blenis got into the fence early in the 150 lapper. Note the broken pole. It had to be repaired and fans had to patiently wait before the race could resume.
When the race restarted these Sportsman drivers put on an incredible show for the SpeedWeekend fans. There was lots of door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper racing on this night!
When all was said and done Dave O’Blenis accepted the winner’s trophy and cheque for the Irving Oil & Blending Packaging 150.
Colby Smith came across the stripe second in the Sportsman race. When the drivers went back to the pits, Colby’s car failed to pass the post race tech inspection.
Russell Smith had his best-ever SpeedWeekend finish coming home third in the race.
Dave O’Blenis flanked by Colby Smith (left) and Russell Smith (right) are on the Irving Oil Blending & Packaging podium.
Team O’Blenis celebrates a win in the big Sportsman race. The victory was especially sweet because Irving Oil Blending & Packaging is the primary sponsor on all of the O’Blenis race cars.
SPEEDWEEKEND SUNDAY
The first qualifying heat for the Re/Max 250 got ugly in a hurry! Cole Boudreau and Glyn Nott got tangled up in corner three. Remarkably both drivers were OK and both cars ended up in the starting grid of the 250!
Dave O’Blenis beats Travis Benjamin to the stripe to win the first heat and grab the pole position for the Re/Max 250. What a way to follow-up that big Sportsman win a few hours earlier.
Another wreck in the second heat. This time Kirk Thibeau hits the fence down in turn one. Kirk’s team worked hard to get the car back on the track and ended up having to take a Past Champion’s Provisional to get into the Re/Max 250.
After the dust cleared Dylan Gosbee beats Shawn Tucker across the line to take heat number two. A great start for Gosbee, after he wrecked his car in the Sportsman race the night before!
Austin Theriault gets around Ben Rowe to win heat number three. These two would be strong contenders for the Re/Max 250, when the BIG RACE got underway.
Big Kevin Moore punches his ticket to the Re/Max 250 by winning heat race number four.
Jeremy Doran, the 2014 Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter Champion, wins his heat race on SpeedWeekend.
Sharp Shooter heat number two results in a little dust-up. That’s something we’re used to when these little cars take the track!
Curtis Collins parks the 38 in Victory Lane after winning the Sharp Shooter second heat race.
“Hollywood” Madore takes the checkered flag in the first DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock SpeedWeekend heat.
Roger Slocum parks his car in the Riverview Ford Victory Lane after winning the second Street Stock heat race.
Chuck Morton picked a fine time to win a race. Chuck scored the victory in the third Street Stock heat.
Trying hard to get in the show! Brent Wiggins and Derek Christie spin-out in the first of two Pro Stock Consi races. Christie would be forced to take a Provisional to get into the Re/Max 250 and Wiggins didn’t make the Show.
Matt Harris (#87) would win one of the Consi races to put his car into the Re/Max 250.
A sigh of relief! Brady Creamer drove his car to victory in the other Consi. That gave him a starting position in the Re/Max 250.
Jeremy Doran caps off a brilliant season by winning the Fredericton Gun Shop Sharp Shooter feature. We might just see this young man move up to Street Stock or Sportsman racing in 2015.
Curtis Collins follows up his heat win with a great second place finish in the Sharp Shooter feature!
Matt Crocker brings it home third in the Sharp Shooter feature. Matt, who only ran part-time in 2014, had a couple of feature wins and this great run on SpeedWeekend.
Early in the DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock feature Rick Cashol (#54) gets the bumper from #94 Ryan Raynes! Is that any way to treat a five time champion?
Here we go again. Ricky is right in the middle of this one too!
It’s getting a little crazy out here.
Number 52 Destiny Enkle, the Port City Princess, dumps Cashol in the late stages of the Street Stock race. Poor Ricky has got to be thinking he’s in an ENDURO race.
Rogers Slocum and Geoff Tugwell battled each other hard the last few laps of this exciting 50 lap SpeedWeekend Street Stock feature. Door-to door through three and four, the two drivers raced to the checkerd flag.
When all was said & done, Tugwell made a victory lap in the Geary Woods.
Roger Slocum had plenty to smile about with an awesome 2nd place finish in the DMR Auto Sales & Service Street Stock feature.
Rob Raynes drove home third in the Street Stock feature. Not a bad way to end the 2014 season.
The dignitaries get “piped in” for the pre-race ceremonies for the 2014 Re/Max 250.
New Brunswick Premier David Alward welcomes the crowd to the SpeedWeekend 2014 as we get ready to go racing.
The rain comes and despite efforts to dry the track, it became evident that the Re/Max 250 would not be run on SpeedWeekend Sunday. After studying the weather forecast, a decision was made to start the race at early on SpeedWeekend Monday.
SPEEDWEEKEND MONDAY
The Re/Max 250 finally goes green at 10:05AM on SpeedWeekend Monday! Dave O’Blenis sprints out to an early lead before dropping back a few spots. O’Blenis kept the leaders in sight, but retired due to engine issues later in the race and settled for a 20th place finish.
It didn’t takes these two cats long to get to the front and stay there most of the day! Travis Benjamin (#17) and Austin Theriault (#57) put on some show for the fans at Speedway 660.
It took 70 laps before the first Service Master Clean Caution came out. There were several long green flag runs and the entire race was run in just two hours and 13 minutes!
Three-time Re/Max 250 winner Shawn Tucker (#52) and Dylan Gosbee both had strong cars early in the race. Tucker’s car fell off a bit later in the race and he settled for a tenth place finish, while Gosbee’s day ended with a disappointing 19th.
Lonnie Sommerville ran a Scott Fraser “tribute car” in the BIG RACE. Lonnie struggled early, but after several pit stops the car came around and he finished in 5th as the top Canadian in the race.
Austin Theriault gets around Benjamin on lap 124 and then on lap 125 picks up the $1500 Modern Electric Half Way Challenge Award!
Joey Doiron (#73) drives underneath Matt Harris to pick up a spot. Doiron was strong all day and came home fourth.
With less than 30 to go, Ben Rowe starts hunting for the win. First he drives under Theriault to grab second spot and then….
…Rowe sets his sights on the leader Travis Benjamin. Rowe & Benjamin would swap the lead several times in the final 20 laps until…
…They are side-by-side with just one lap to go in the Re/Max 250. This is gonna be one exciting last lap!
Benjamin crosses the stripe first in one of the most exciting Re/Max 250’s ever. Wow what a finish, sure glad we came back Monday morning for this classic race!
Travis Benjamin finally wins the Re/Max 250 and salutes the great Speedway 660 fans who endured rain Sunday and came back early Monday for this awesome race!
Shawna Roy from Re/Max presents Travis Benjamin with a cheque for $20,200! That’s an incredible payday for one of North America’s best short-track drivers.
Ben Rowe drove the wheels off “Hurricane” Hal O’Neal’s machine. Ben came so close to winning his first Re/Max 250, but still was pretty proud to take home the second place trophy.
Austin Theriault finished third in the BIG RACE and picked up the Modern Electric Half Way Challenge Award.
Benjamin, Theriault and Rowe put on some show for SpeedWeekend fans. It was a Re/Max 250 for the ages and a race everyone will be talking about for many years to come.
Travis Benjamin finally got to the Riverview Ford Victory Lane in the Re/Max 250! Travis, who has been sponsored by Irving for many years, was ecstatic to win the BIG RACE right in the heart of IRVING COUNTRY!
Think we’re done? Not likely! We’ve still got an ENDURO 200 to run before the curtain comes down on SpeedWeekend 2014.
Holy Smokes – It didn’t take long before these ENDURO driver started mixing things up.
Try a little dust. There’s an ENDURO car in there somewhere!
More action, more dust. You always get a little dirty when you go ENDURO racin!
Josh Barton (#17) might have a little trouble seeing where he’s going and the aerodynamics might not be great either! Matt Caissie (#19) hits the binders heading into turn three.
Totally outta control! Rheal Kenny is slide-ways down in turn four. Steven Thibideau (#46) is not much better off.
Jeremy Doran, winner of that SpeedWeekend Sharp Shooter feature, talked someone into letting him drive their ENDURO car. And Jeremy ends up going for a wild ride!
Jeremy has been in this position before. He scrambled out of the car and did a “Carl Edwards back-flip” from the car into the Speedway 660 beach!
Wrong way down a one way street! Roger Slocum (#29) seems to be a little dazed & confused in the late stages of the SpeedWeekend ENDURO 200.
Jesse Madore drove his machine to victory lane. Jesse won two out of three ENDUROs this year, but missed the championship by two measly points!
Pat Sharpe and his team were second in the race, but more important, they captured their fourth ENDURO title at Speedway 660! Congrats to the Woodstock Warriors!
Team Barton comes home third in the ENDURO and Courtney won an extra couple of hundred for spinning the most cars in the final 50 laps.
Thank-you Fans for attending SpeedWeekend and the other events in our amazing 2014 racing season. Please have a safe fall & winter and we look forward to seeing you back in the Geary Woods for the Riverview Ford Season Opener in May, 2015!
