DQ Kids Night is finally going to happen at Speedway 660. The most popular event for our youngest fans was originally scheduled for June 5th, but as all our kids know, it was washed out. They have been waiting for more than two months, but their wait is almost over.
DQ Kids Night is a special time for our young fans. They get to go into the pits at 6PM for about 45 minutes to meet their favourite drivers and check out the race cars. Then there is the candy scramble on the front stretch during intermission and DQ always brings a freezer full of treats.
Kids have always been a big part of our racing family at Speedway 660. This year it’s even more exciting because some of our kids will be racing in their Bandolero cars. Although this division is only in its first year, it is fast becoming a crowd favourite. I know a lot of our fans will head straight over to the Bandolero cars and drivers as soon as the pits open.
Sunday afternoon at Speedway 660 was the second leg of the weekend double header in the Geary woods. The event saw 18 cars make their way to compete on the 1/3 mile asphalt. The winner on the afternoon was Pat Sharpe in his #51 who narrowly escaped several wrecks in the last 50 lap segment. In the end the real winners on this day were the nearly 2000 fans.
Over 4000 fans were treated to a dominating performance by the #48 of Dave O’Blenis. O’Blenis who started 7th on the grid for the Max 1 Advanced Synthetic Pro Stock 150 wasted little time getting his Burger King ride to the front. On lap 25, with lap traffic hindering race leader Scott Chubbuck, O’Blenis was able to make the pass and he never looked back from there. A total of 20 cars made their way to the Geary woods for the 250 warm up with the winner getting an automatic bye into this year’s big event on Labor Day Sunday. Chubbuck made a late charge in the dying laps but O’Blenis was just too strong. Chubbuck finished a very respectable 2nd place while last years 250 winner Lonnie Sommerville finished a strong third. After the race O’Blenis said “that just takes all of the pressure of for Labor Day and we have a car that can win.”
