Fredericton, NB – The Cancer Society has many events throughout the year to raise money for various cancer patients, survivors, and research to fight against Cancer. Many people are probably very familiar with the Relay for Life or the Walk for Cancer, but have you ever heard of the Race for Cancer? If not that’s probably because it has never been done. This weekend at Speedway 660, Fire Rescue Crew member, Wayne Smith, will begin his 72 hour drive to raise money for cancer research.
Wayne Smith is a 60 year old firefighter with 25 years experience. Smith has been a long time staff member for Speedway 660 and has partnered up with co-owners Steven Burns, Chris Johnston and Tracy Burns to make this fundraiser a great success. Smith will begin his driving endeavour this Saturday, June 7th, after the racing events have completed for DQ Kids Day. He will hop into the Speedway 660 Pro Stock race car and begin his 72 hours of intensive driving completing as many laps as possible, stopping only for much needed breaks along the way, such as to eat, sleep and use the washroom.
Smith is a thirty year cancer free survivor and decided to do this in order to raise awareness and hopefully inspire other cancer patients that are going through a hard time. Thirty may be the magical number in this fundraiser as Smith’s goal is to raiser 30k for all the years he has been cancer free.
Smith has also brought in another exciting aspect to add a little twist for anyone willing to get into the passengers seat. Throughout the 72 hours he is onsite at the track, especially Sunday June 8th, Smith will be offering ride along for a small price of $5.00. All money raised from the ride along will go towards the grand total at the end of the event. You don’t have to even be a stock car fan to take part in this special opportunity and it is a once in a lifetime deal for most people all the while raising money for such a great cause.
All money raised will be presented to the Cancer society on Saturday, June 14th, the evening of the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman 100 by none other than Wayne Smith along with Steve Burns, Tracy Burns and Chris Johnston. Please stop by the speedway and donate to this worthy cause between Saturday, June 7th and Tuesday June 10th.
