Our Pro Stocks are something else: Wade’s Weekly 2015 #6

Speedway 660 has run a Weekly Pro Stock Division ever since we dropped the first green flag in the Geary Woods back in 1994. Over the years we’ve seen car counts go up and down, but the quality of racing has always been very good.  However, this year the racing has been exceptional, maybe even the best we’ve ever seen!

Do you realize how lucky we are?

Many of us old timers have seen our fair share of short-track racing. As a kid I spent my Saturday nights at Riverglade Speedway, where I developed a lifelong love for this sport.

Speedway 660 is into its third decade and over the years we occasionally might have taken Pro Stock racing for granted, but that shouldn’t be the case in 2015. The Re/Max Group Four Realty Pro Stock Division, not only has a great car count this year, the caliber of drivers, race teams and cars is incredible.Matt Harris feature win May 24th, 2015Matt Harris had a fast car and won the first RE/MAX Pro Stock feature of the season. Harris is just one of many contenders for the 2015 championship.

And the fact that we are now running fifty lap Pro Stock features has raised the level of competition to new heights. Take last week for example. The feature started with Paul Gahan and Brady Creamer up front and those two battled for several laps before Brady was able to grab sole passion of first place.

Then we had Lonnie Sommerville and Dave O’Blenis, two of our region’s best, begin to reel in the leader while racing each other hard. It was an amazing race, but it got even better when Greg Fahey started passing cars on the outside groove. A lot of folks figured Greg’s progress would be halted when he caught up to Sommerville and O’Blenis.Greg Fahey Pro Stock podium 2015Greg Fahey is the early season Pro Stock points leader. Greg had a 2nd place finish in the first 50 lap feature before winning it last Saturday night.

But that’s just when Fahey, the Pride of Charlotte County, showed us all why he’s a three time Pro Stock champ. Greg marched right on by the 23 and 48 and set his sights on the leader. You’ve got to give young Creamer credit because he ran a determined race and came home second, behind an even more determined Greg Fahey.

The first Pro Stock feature of the season had a similar story line, with Matt Harris taking the checkers. This year’s Pro Stock races have been fast and incredibly exciting and competitive. As Greg said from the Riverview Ford Victory Lane Saturday Night “Who-ever wins the Re/Max Pro Stock title in 2015 is going to have to earn it.”Brady Creamer pro stock heat winner 2015Watch out for this kid! Miramichi’s Brady Creamer won a Pro Stock heat race last week before an amazing 2nd place finish in the feature. Brady is really coming into his own in 2015.

And all of this brings me back to the following point. Most of us don’t realize just how fortunate we are as fans to see this caliber of racing. I’d say we better enjoy it and not only that, we’d better spread the word and let folks know just what they’re missing! Pro Stock racing is as good as it gets in this neck of the woods and in 2015 Speedway 660 has seen a resurgence in its top division.

I don’t want to take anything away from all of the dedicated drivers and race teams in our four other divisions. They all work hard to put on a great show for us every week. But there’s something about the Pro Stocks that gives you  goose bumps when they take the track for their 50 lap feature.pro stock action 2015Race fans are either on the edge of their seats or on their feet when the RE/MAX Pro Stocks race door-to-door and bumper-to-bumper.

We’ve got veterans, we got young guns and they’ve all got talent! On any given night everyone in this stacked field is capable of a podium finish. Even though we’ve gotten off to a great start to the season, I think the best is yet to come. This kind of competition makes everybody work harder and makes everybody better.

This Saturday night the Re/Max Pro Stock division drivers will go at it again and don’t be surprised if we get our third different winner of the season. And in a little over two weeks time the Maritime Pro Stock Tour is headed to the Geary Woods. As good as they are, the tour drivers had better be at the top of their game because I expect several of our weekly drivers to come out for that 100 lapper and give them a run for their money.Kevin Moore pro stock podium 2015Kevin Moore has been a dedicated Pro Stock driver in the Geary Woods for many years. Big Kevin, who had a podium finish in week one, loves competition and this year he’s racing against the best field of Pro Stocks we’ve seen in years!

And that brings me back to the fact that for 21 years we have been running Pro Stocks as a weekly division. Mr. O’Leary, who built and operated our track in the early years, deserves credit for making that happen. And we are the beneficiaries. We are the ones who get to enjoy racing at the highest level each week.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to get back to Speedway 660 this Saturday night. We’re guaranteed to see the best racing in our region. And when those Pro Stocks fire up their engines and rumble out on the track hold onto your hats because you are going to have something to talk about.pro stock action 2015If you haven’t been down to the Geary Woods for awhile, you better come down this Saturday night to see the awesome show these Pro Stock drivers will put on for you!

If you’ve been following along on www.speedway660.com but haven’t been down to the Geary Woods for a few years, please come down to see us real soon. The Re/Max Pro Stocks alone are worth the price of admission.

Oh and by the way – this just in – Kid’s Day and the 25 lap Bando Blast have been added to Saturday race program. Remember they were rained out earlier in the season. The pre-race autograph session goes at 5:30PM and our famous candy scramble will happen during the intermission!

We’ll see you at the races!
