Friday April 24, 2009
FREDERICTON: Its that time of year again, snow is melting, water levels are rising and stock cars around the province and coming out of hibernation and being prepared for several pre-season car shows. It’s also the time of year when Speedway 660 launches its season with an annual trip to the Radical Speed Sport East motorsports show at the Moncton Coliseum. The show gets underway today at 2pm and runs through Sunday.
The 2009 season will mark the second year the Geary oval will fly under the Speedway 660 banner and the summer schedule has a few new twists and changes. “We are constantly trying to refine our schedule to make it the most entertaining and convenient for our fans” said co-owner Steve Burns.
Highlights for the 2009 season include:
TRIPLE CROWN – Over the past winter Speedway 660, Riverside Speedway, Scotia Speedworld and the CARQUEST Pro Stock Tour decided to work together with the three 250 lap Pro Stock events (IWK 250, Atlantic Cat 250 and Peterbilt 250) to create the Triple Crown. This association is an effort to work together to elevate the presence of the sport in the region. Together the three events will have a combined purse of $250,000 for the competing teams. In addition there will be an extra bonus of $50,000 to any driver who can win all three Triple Crown events. “Everyone has worked hard to build their own event and its unique identity among fans. Our goal for working together is to retain our identities but collectively to elevate the media presence of stock car racing in the region. In addition we feel we can build something special with this Triple Crown that will be recognized across North America” said Co-owner Chris Johnston.
FAN FEST 2009 – This event is a new addition to the Speedway 660 schedule and is the first of its kind in the region. FAN FEST 2009 will feature a full card of racing as well as many other fan oriented activities but the really AWESOME part of this day will be the fact that admission will be FREE of charge! No typo, July 4th will be FREE admission. “This event is something we have been thinking about for several years and 2009 will be the year it happens. We are really excited about this event. There will be a multitude of activities onsite for the day and it will be a great chance for folks to come out and see what the entertainment product we offer each and every week” said Co-owner Chris Johnston. Further details will be release as the season gets going on how FAN FEST 2009 will roll out and fans and new fans will be able to acquire the FREE admission tickets.
PRO ALL STARS SERIES 200 – The return of the Pro All Stars Series Pro Stock touring division out of New England for a June 13th stop. This 200 lap Pro Stock event is sure to draw the top teams from New England and Eastern Canada.
CARQUEST PRO STOCK TOUR – The CARQEST Pro Stock Tour will return for one 100 lap event on June 27th and will also be part of this year’s Peterbilt 250.
FOUR CYLINDER DIVISION – Speedway 660 will introduce a new entry level 4 cylinder division in 2009. The division will start on July 25th and run 3 times over the summer. The goal of this division is to introduce new competitors to the sport in a more cost effective car.
AOW – Atlantic Open Wheel division will call Speedway 660 their home track for 2009 with 6 dates slotted on this years schedule. With a large concentration of these cars in southern NB, teams are really looking forward to running close to home.
FRONT WHEEL DRIVE ENDURO – 2009 will see a new class of cars running in the August 16th Enduro. The rules for this front wheel drive division will be focusing on mid size late model front wheel drive cars like the ford Taurus, Chev Monte Carlo, Pontiac Grand Am etc. These cars will run in one Enduro in 2009 on Aug 16th.
START TIMES – In addition to all the great events on the schedule, Speedway 660 has made some start time changes for the 2009 season. Saturday night events will revert back to the traditional 7pm start in an effort to allow fans to be able to go about their day on Saturdays without having to head to the track before or during supper hour.
ENDURO SUNDAYS – Speedway 660 will run 3 Enduro on Sunday afternoons in 2009. Again this is a result of feedback from fans that the Friday night events were challenging to get to because of work commitments.
SEASON FINALE – For several years now SPEEDWEEKEND has been growing into the largest racing weekend in the Maritimes. With that success the races that have followed SPEEDWEEKEND in September have been a challenge to make work as they had become anti-climactic after the rush of SPEEDWEEKEND. In 2009, Speedway 660 will host the final points day the week before SPEEDWEEKEND and crown the season champions and then finish up the season with SPEEDWEEKEND. “We have been getting feedback on this from fans and drivers for the last several years and the response to having SPEEDWEEKEND be the season finale has been overwhelmingly positive. We build towards this weekend all year and it should be the grand final of our season” said Burns.
