DQ Kids Day – Story and Race Results!

Fredericton, NB – As the second event of the double header weekend went underway, it looked like Mother Nature may interfere with the Speedway’s plans. However, after a little bit of sun dancing, Mother Nature held off her summer showers and gave fans another great night of racing in all consecutive classes.

To start off the evening the younger fans were able to go to the pits earlier than normal thanks to the pre-race autograph session. Drivers came fully prepared to show their appreciation to the youngsters by giving out pictures, candy, and signing autographs. There was a candy scramble during intermission that led the youngsters to the speedway front stretch for a mad dash to grab as much candy as they could. Off the track, the kids got to fill out a ballot for a chance to get into the KHJ/The FOX/Capital FM Money Machine and take home as much money as they could grab. Only one lucky fan took home a whopping $168 in his pocket.

Aside from the spectacular events for the kids, the drivers put on a great night of racing to conclude the second race of the 2008 season. In the Coast Tire Street Stock division the #40 of Bill Belleville dominated the Street Stock feature after taking the lead on lap three. While Belleville was at the beginning of the pack, Jack Lane in the #13 and Matt Matheson in the #2 worked their way through the field to battle it out for the top positions. It looked like Belleville, Lane and Matheson were the perfect candidates for a one, two, and three finish until Dana Brooks in the #05 came cruising through on lap 17 to take away the second position, passing Lane and Matheson. Brooks could not hold of the charging Geary pair and had to settle for a fifth place position. After taking the early lead, Belleville took it on home to win the feature. Rounding out the podium finishes were Jack Lane in second and Matt Matheson for third.

In the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman division Derrick McKay in the #84 looked as if he may take home his first podium finish of the 2008 season, by leading the first nine laps. Competition came into view of his rear view mirror when he seen the #29 of Matt Maillet and the #40 of Richard Atkinson scooting their way to the front of the field. Atkinson took the lead away from McKay on lap 13 and then began the struggle to fight off Maillet. After numerous lead changes between Atkinson and Maillet, the #29 prevailed to take home the victory win. Brent Roy in the #26 received an unexpected birthday present, a second place podium finish, while Richard Atkinson had to settle for third.

In the Irving Lubricants Pro Stock division Myles Harris in the #31 ran a very consistent race leading 38 laps of the 40 lap feature. Harris had the right set up tonight to take home a feature win but Brent Wiggins in the #17 had a different plan. After his first feature win during the season opener, Wiggins decided he wanted to repeat that win with another first place victory this week. Wiggins and Harris battled it out until the last lap, with Harris occupying the lead every time. It was the tightest finish, so far, for the 2008 season but Wiggins took the win in the end. Harris had to settle for second while the #20 of Greg Fahey rounded out the top three.

Next weekend is another double header event featuring TWO big races in one night! The Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman 100 will take place next Saturday PLUS the previously postponed Irving Lubricants “Best of the Best” Pro Stock 100. Two big events in one night, How WicKID is that? Make sure you swing by the Geary woods next weekend for a chance to see the three divisions put on another great night of racing!
