Season Opener: Take Two!
Are you ready for some racing? Really ready? Well this Saturday night at seven, Speedway 660 opens the 2011 season with the perennial favorite, DQ Kids Day!
Last weekend we were all stoked for the season opener. There were excellent car counts in all five divisions and lots of fans. The Weather Network and Environment Canada promised clear skies by early afternoon and by race time we were supposed to be basking in sunshine and 20 degree temps. Well that didn’t happen and the drizzle persisted to the point where we had no choice but to call off the event.
Fans, race teams, sponsors and Speedway 660 management and employees were all disappointed. But as one veteran sportsman driver told me: “The track was just too slick and at least we get to take our cars home in one piece, because we would have wrecked a bunch of them had we tried to race.”
The Hardest Job in Racing
Drivers and race teams work hard to be the best they can be on race day. But I believe the most difficult job is making the tough decisions that Speedway 660 owners have to make. And no decision is tougher than monitoring the skies when the weather is unsettled and deciding whether to race. And that call has to be made, early in the day, before race teams and fans head to the track. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.
Officials at Speedway 660 have been forced to cancel today’s events do to drizzle and showers that set in just after 7pm. There is no rain date for the event.
Racing returns Saturday June 4th with the DQ Kids Day!
Just a quick note for Sportsman and Street Stock that tires are available at the Speedway. Tires sales open during during the day until 5pm. If you require a later time please call the office to confirm someone will be available onsite (506-454-7223 options 2)
It’s that time of year again, the wait is over, let the summer festivities begin. This Saturday the 2011 season will open with the Riverview Ford Lincoln Season Opener. There will be points racing in every division, the RVWorld Street Stocks, the Martin’s Home Heating Sportsman, and Pro Stocks. In addition fan will see the return of the 4 cylinder division and the Hanwell Village Mart Bandolero division. Everything gets underway at 7pm with heats, dashes and features in all divisions. In addition fans will see Bandolero and 4 Cylinder heat races at approx 6:20pm.
Finally it’s Time to Go Racing!
Is it just me, or did this year’s off-season seem a little longer than usual? It’s been the better part of nine months since we locked the gate at Speedway 660 and began our annual racing hibernation.
Well the long wait is pretty much over, because this Saturday night we will kick off the 2011 season. Fans all across our region are getting set to make tracks to Atlantic Canada’s fastest and most popular speedway to see the green flag drop at 7 o’clock.
Speedway 660 is looking for talent in the announcing booth. We need a Junior announcer for our fast growing Bandolero division. Let us know if you are a young race fan and think you can handle the job!
Our Junior announcer needs to be outgoing and able to talk a mile a minute while describing the on-track action. He or she would interview Bandalero drivers, do play-by-play of their races, talk about upcoming events, read sponsor lists and other announcer duties.
If you are a young race fan, between 10 and 14, and have got what it takes to be a Junior announcer – we want to hear from you!
his season will mark the second year for two divisions that will run on a semi-full time basis at Speedway 660. The Hanwell Village Mart Bandoleros and the 4 Cylinder division will each run 10 times in 2011. Car counts look to be growing in each division and upwards to 14-16 cars are expected to start the 2011 season. These two divisions will also compete during SPEEDWEEKEND. Details are still to be finalized.
